William Sieber earned his doctorate in clinical health psychology from Yale University and completed his clinical training at the Palo Alto VA and the Stanford School of Medicine. His research interests and publications have focused on assessment of quality of life, impact of behavioral medicine interventions on patients’ mood and health, and performance enhancement of health care providers. Dr. Sieber holds a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine and Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He serves as Research Director for the division of Family Medicine and helps coordinate the UCSD Collaborative Care program, a service designed to deliver mental health services to primary care patients. Dr. Sieber serves as a reviewer for nearly a dozen peer-reviewed medical journals, has been a consultant to the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, and has presented to over 10,000 health care providers on topics of stress, burnout, and health promotion. As a licensed clinical psychologist he has directly provided and supervised the delivery of mental health services for over 20 years in a variety of settings.

Dr. Sieber’s career goal is to improve the health and mental health of patients in the U.S. healthcare system. He aims to accomplish these goals by both improving mental health care delivery and improving the ability of providers to better assess and manage patients’ mental health needs. His philosophy is that most problems experienced by healthcare providers result from a lack of skills, and not as a result of pathology. Dr. Sieber has co-facilitated the Professional Boundaries Program and the Anger Management Program for Healthcare Professionals previously offered through the PACE program at UCSD since 2002. He has experience working with hospitals and healthcare facilities providing organizational and industrial psychology services in the form of organizational assessment, physician and leadership coaching, teambuilding, and by conducting a variety of educational workshops designed to improve staff and team functioning. Through these programs and services Dr. Sieber has helped hundreds of physicians and other healthcare providers address overwhelming stress and burnout, and improve the quality of both their personal and professional life. Dr. Sieber enjoys helping healthcare providers develop new skills that provide greater success and satisfaction in both career and personal arenas.
